I have a strange problem. I'm using the same sound card found in the MintyPi. No matter what I try, it distorts terribly. I've tried replacing it (twice) and altering config.txt. I've also messed with alsa and various sound settings. It's connected through an amplifier and a potentiometer, but the distortion I'm experiencing is so far beyond awful I doubt it could be corrupted by just those components. What should I try next? I'm considering a fresh install of Raspbian.

Is it a legit board or is it the one you have in the github? You're missing important filtering on the outputs before going to the amp. I made a custom board using the same chip and an amp as well and I never had these issues.

Nope, not a custom board. MintyPi sound card + Adafruit amp. I reinstalled RetroPie, and now there's no sound even though the audio output has been set to USB audio.

I replaced the adafruit amp and it seems to work perfectly now!
