Setting up retropie fir the first time

Hey peeps.
I am waiting on a new screen as it seems to be shorting or something might be wring with the ribbon cable. In the meantime i wanted to ask about settings and controls. When my screen worked during testing, i noticed that the text was small and not overly clear to read. Do you just do your best to read it and go line by line to confirm controls or is there another way?
