CSO - 320x240 Screen Interference?

Post by Y0SHI » Tue Feb 20, 2018 7:25 am

Ah man! ... I just want to start by saying how amazing the Circuit Sword kit is, thanks Kite you have done an awesome job!

I think I might have found a slight issuette with my build ... the 320x240 screen seems to have a blueish tint to it and at times I can notice a flicker, almost as if certain rows are shifting 1 pixel left and right.

Weirdly, TESTER mode looks OK and the screen flicker seems fine when playing games and scrolling through emulation station menus, but I can notice it when I stop to read the games list.

I'm going to re-seat the ribbon cable to see if that resolves it but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar with theirs?

Cheers in advance!

If you have something like nail varnish remover (acetone) and a brush/cotton, you should clean the contacts and clean the connector itself (where possible) to give it a good try.. not seen that before but sounds like one of the channels isn't properly making a connection. If possible get a pic/video of it happening :)

I have taken it to bits, given it a clean with some nail polish remover and reseated the cable but I still have the issue :(

Here is a pic of the problem ...

Image

I have highlighted the edges of the rows with red circles in this pic, notice that the whole row has shifted by about 1 pixel ...

Image

I think you are right about a connection issue as I noticed when I had the cable like this it works fine ...

Image

Here is a pic of the screen when the cable is in this position notice the rows aren't shifted and it is working fine ...

Image

The cable is in and looks nicely seated the clips are firmly down and the cable feels secure, nothing appears to be shorting ... any ideas what to do next?

It seems that I may be in a similar boat with issues on the LCD. Obviously the LCD cable is very sensitive, but I may have underestimated how sensitive. I know my LCD was working fine during a test run, but here is what is happening with mine now.

1. I assembled everything into the DMG and I lost about the bottom 1/4 inch of the display. Boot text did appear, but after boot the screen was white (minus the bottom 0.25 inch).
2. I tried wiggling the cable slightly and the controller setup did appear, but color display was off (slight blue color).
3. tried reseating the cable and noticed that the sides of the connector for the display on the CSO was hot.
4. I ohm'd out a few pins on the CSO LCD connector and found it appears that pins 1,2, 53, and 54 are shorted. Update - These pins may correspond to ground connections according to one data sheet I found.

Any ideas what to try? Or more details on the problem?

Update: I checked the mini-hdmi and it still works.

For both of you, we can try a new LCD. Do you happen to have ANY 3.5" LCD lying around? Try that if you do.. if you don't, send me a PM and I'll get you a replacement...

@Jfenton78 yours really sounds like the LCD was damaged, i'm not sure what to make of it other than replace the LCD. Show a picture if you can. And PM me and we can replace it.

Kite,

For the pic do you want a particular location or just an overall image with the CSO powered up? Thanks for offering a replacement as I don't have any spare LCDs. I'll PM you and you can let me know the cost. Is there any troubleshooting that I can conduct on the board to ensure everything is still working?

Update: Email sent.

@Jfenton78 ideally the tester colour bar image, but the default screen is fine, just need a clear photo like the others in this thread :) Also if you press on the connector, CM3, or move the LCD ribbon does that affect it?

I'll reply to both your emails a little later, and sort out new screens probably for shipping on Monday

Kite,

I'm not getting any response from the LCD now. I've pressed on the connector, CM3, and ribbon with no response. I know the CM3 and some parts of the CSO work as I'm able to see output via the mini-hdmi using the same microsd. I did a little more testing and the left side of the LCD connector on the CSO get warm with nothing plugged in. If I plug in the LCD cable the same region gets noticeably warm. Checking the same region of the CSO on the CM3 side I found a square shaped component (voltage regulator?) to the immediate left of L2 that gets very hot to the touch. I assume this is not normal. I'm attaching a few pics.

Booted showed square component at L2 that gets hot when LCD was connected. Note that LCD was removed for pic.
