PSP 1000 Joystick with Circuit Sword

I decided to add a PSP 1000 joystick to my circuit sword build, but it doesn't seem to work. I'm assuming it's not plug and play and that there's some kind of setup involved, but every time I search the problem, I find links to wiki guides on setting up a joystick that no longer exist.

When I do configure input in the menu, I can setup all the other buttons, but the joystick doesn't respond at all.

I used this image as a guide:

I followed the wiring according to the board:

And I wired it as thus:

I found conflicting information on which side power and ground go on, some images say power is the 2nd one and ground is the 4th one, but others say power is the 4th and ground is the 2nd. I've tried both ways, and neither work.

I have 2 PSP 1000 joysticks, but I'm only using 1 in the build, I did however wire up both of them, and tried one connected to the Joystick 1 connector and the other on the joystick 2 connector, the one pictured above is the one I tried in joystick 2, neither of them respond in configure input.

I'm not sure what I need to do to troubleshoot this problem.

I noticed a set of pads on the back of the board that line up with the joystick, I tried wiring it the same way as those pads to see if that would make a difference, and it didn't, I also made sure I covered them with kapton tape to make sure the joystick wiring doesn't short on them. I had been putting kapton over the solder joints anyway just to make sure.
