That would be super cool, but where the heck would you put X/Y buttons? If i recall correctly, the A/B were right against the screen wasn't it?
Edit: The post was referring to the wonderswan
Yes it the buttons are quite close:

I did see someone on youtube trying this same idea on a Wonderswan Color. But I don't think he has gotten anywhere, apart from the teardown! I got into wonderswans, after buying loads of Virtual Boys (back when they were $10 apiece) and found out the designer was Gumpei Yokoi, he also designed the Wonderswan.

Ignition looks cool, maybe a PSP is still a good idea also. They are dirt cheap too.

Nice big screen, lots of space, lots of buttons
Plus if android comes to Pi3 it's just icing on the cake

Kinda pricey, but still it'd be worth it

The wii u gamepad does sound pretty awesome but only if it can incorporate a Pi 3 to take advantage of the power and available games. The only problem is solving the power and overheating issue. I know this has come up a few times when people have tried to use a Pi 3 in the gameboy zero project.

I agree. After I complete my GBZ, I want to use a Wii U gamepad. I was seeing some broken ones for around $50 USD on eBay--Not too bad.

Since I like the retro feel though, the other option I am considering is the GBA system if I can find room for buttons.

What about a game boy sp with this:

It already has battery, speaker, ...., and its size it's smaller than game boy zero.

I don't know I'd still like to see a horizontal handheld GBA style or DS (lower-half) style something with d-pad/analog stick, ABXY, R/L (R2/L2 maybe?) 16:9 aspect ration screen, BT:LE, WiFi. with the proper ports exposed to be dock-able. Given the 'wants' list it would likely have to be a custom shell. for the 16:9 scree it would be handy to be able to use the the Official Pi Display. So now we are talking pi2 or pi3 level hardware...

My push for the 16:9 screen while true most retro games run 4:3 or the like. I know of a few OS/UI which would make use of the extra real estate for other related stuff instead of just leaving black bars on the sides.

My Wii U Gamepad came in the mail today. Can't wait to do this.
It is a functioning used one from ebay. Japanese Version, so it is useless outside of japan (region lock).

I think i will stick with the RPi0 Solution. Because there is not that much more space.
I will try to keep the display, however. Maybe kite can help me here.

That reminds me... i have to take some pictures for him.
