set up new FE from vanilla retropie img

Post by Robochris » Sun Jun 23, 2019 10:08 am

Does anyone have advice on setting up a new img for the FE?
off the top of my head I'd need to set up safe shutdown, battery monitor, screen, controls...

I just dont like the way their img is set up... mostly the select button menu and additional icons at the top (just redundant) but its also just finicky and slow...

Im just not sure which gpio pins go where.

I read about a v2 img might be coming awhile back but that never happened.

thoughts?

The V2 image is coming, I've been delaying it though as it's a big task to upgrade image for most so I'm trying to make sure it has everything needed on it.

If you don't want to run the AllForOne software you can use the retrogame system instead, would you like the new image to be able to choose between it? Retrogame does the controls but not overlay. The OneForAll system does the icons and that select overlay and controls and safe shutdown. I appreciate the OneForAll software can appear slow but it's written in a way so it uses the least resources of the Pi as possible so it runs when resources are free which can give slight delays between the select button being pressed and the overlay appearing.

For me personally, all I really want is a battery monitor. so i guess it sounds like maybe just retrogame and a battery monitor. I was going to try and build my own img but I couldnt figure out which gpio runs to which components.. If you can make the new img switch between the two that would be awesome! Im just not a fan of the select overlay, just seems like redundant options, and I dont need wifi and bluetooth icons... just my personal opinion. Do you have an estimated release date for the new img?

It always feels like a few days away but by this point I realise I'd bad at estimating when it'll be out. It's about 96% done. If I add this ability to swap it might add another week to the release but I'm happy to do it as I think it's a good idea.

Thats awesome. I dont mind waiting, I dont have time to play right now anyways. If you can easily make that a feature thats excellent! This makes me incredibly happy. thank you!

I've finished the updated OneForAll software, just a case of preparing the image now :)
