Full VGA resolution (640x480) 3.5" display, composite in

Post by Cannikin » Wed May 11, 2016 3:14 pm

Anyone thought about using a full VGA resolution screen? Here’s a 640×480 screen and the controller board looks to be about the same size as the screen: http://www.avionicslcd.com/3.5_LCD_VGA/ ... isplay.htm

We could probably lose the separate inputs board and just wire up power and the component signal directly.

Only problem is the $238 price tag and the fact that you have to buy at least 3 of them. :( :?:

The display look cool but that's a hefty price tag though. I don't think it will fit because of the connector breakout board. It looks like you might be able to wire it up directly but there are some power components on the board and they might be necessary.

Lemmie email them and see if it's possible to wire a component connection directly to the display board. Those power components may just be responsible for regulating the power input to a nice smooth 12v...we could make our own in a much smaller package and be good to go.

Response from AvionicsLCD. I asked if it was possible to remove the separate input board and connect power and composite cables directly to the display board:
Yes, you can ! We have a different version driver board, that separate each input connector. stand alone VGA , stand alone 12V DC jack, and stand alone composite Video.
I asked for photos/diagrams of this alternate setup. I'll post an update if they come back to me.

That would be so cool, too bad it'll probably cost more than the rest of the build...

I had the same thought. Boy, would that make for an amazing screen. Good quality, and I'm sure you can depend on it. That price tag though in comparison to the $5 computer controlling it. Yowch!

Edit: On a crazy unrelated note, it makes me wonder what the most expensive thing an RPi has controlled.

Found a much cheaper one at $85!

No mention of the voltage on this one, but again the controller board looks to be about the same size as the screen, and the other boards are completely removable. I might just have to be a guinea pig for this one and let everyone know how it turns out...

This search on ebay returns several instances of what appear to be the same board, many of them have photos with the screen actually on: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4 ... 0&_sacat=0

Ordered! It's shipping from China so it's gonna be a while, but I'll report back with what I find.

That "professional Test Team" though!

Did you find anything that hints towards it's power consumption?
I'd be very interested in a side by side comparison with the adafruit display, and the $15 backup displays on amazon.
