I documented the steps I take after installing a RetroPie image which includes optimizations for quicker boot/shutdown, lowered resource usage, better performance and reduced power consumption.
This is the setup I have on both a Pi2 and a Pi0.
I haven't been able to test the effect on battery life as I haven't built my GBZ yet, but maybe this will help some people out.

Re: Optimizing boot time and resource usage
I'll have to give this a try when I get home. Cool stuff! I'll check boot/shutdown time and do a full battery test after

Disabling Wait for Network alone is HUGE. Just stumbled onto that, and shaved about 15sec from my boot when I have my Wifi dongle disconnected.
Re: Optimizing boot time and resource usage
Thank you!
reduced boottime from 1:19 to 42 seconds.
perfect!!!

Re: Optimizing boot time and resource usage
Sounds cool!
I will try it out on my Pi3 Gameboy (which already is REALLY fast and boots and shuts down in a matter of seconds) and report back if something noticably improved.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to inform you that I am currently moving very far away, and therefore I am very busy.
UPDATE: I am still alive! My ISP is setting up my internet on the 19th of January at my new place, explaining my offline-ness.
If you write me a PM, I will very likely take some time to respond.
Also, my 2nd build will soon go on, so if you've been following it, please stay tuned!
Many thanks for your understanding!

Re: Optimizing boot time and resource usage
Okay, so I did everything and my boot time (from the large rainbow square in the beginning) is 16 seconds. To be honest though, I think it was already really fast. Also, I don't know if this has somehow improved my battery life or power consumption, but I will check on that with an amp-meter (: (my current draw was around 800 mA afaik)
