SNES BUTTONS & MORE (read if planning a SNES colorway)
my next GBZ is a SNES inspired custom build.....
but having a look at other builds out there, the buttons seem like an issue (well to me they do).....
there either the wrong colors or they just don't fit right (slight smaller dimensions)
Exhibit A (wrong colors)
Exhibit B (lucy goosey buttons)
NB: not having a knock at anyones builds, these are just to prove a point....
i'm actually going to be using buttons that I've got from a original famicom controller......
they fit the holes of the DMG shell/case pretty good, and their obviously their right colors.....
others have used third party SNES styled controllers, but where as those have the colors pretty much on point, the dimensions are a bit off...
and the third option (this is where we get the funky colors), is that people have been buying Gameboy DMG buttons and trying to get the same color combination as the SNES (but end up with off greens and yellows)
the forth option, and the best at the moment if you dont want to buy a used original controllers is to get these buttons....
their reproduction SNES buttons
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/produc ... ea98EpXLNC
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SNES-CONTROL ... 1438.l2649
compared against the original super famicom....
originals on the left, repro on the right.....
repro on the top, originals on the bottom.....
now dimension & height wise there spot on, even the colors are pretty much identical...
the only negatives, and this is only really noticeable when the two are side by side is that the originals have a bit more of a gloss to them (bearing in mind my original are used and must be around 20 years old if not older)
also the originals have a marginal more curved top (dome) to the repro
NB: either with originals or repro, the SNES buttons as standard have a slightly shorter height to them than the original DMG buttons (again this is only noticeable when the two are side by side)
this may be useful to other, or not.....
but its just one of my little bug bears when i see SNES colorways on builds
and its IMHO
NB: not having a knock at anyones builds, these are just to prove a point....

just an example of the difference
Really thin GBC style, 2MMx16MM B10K, DMG replacement......
from left to right (just so you know which one you might have or have used)
LEFT
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Qu ... eLevelAB=5
MIDDLE
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10Pcs-B ... eLevelAB=5
RIGHT
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/produc ... f0d0klbELA
this might be of help to others, or maybe not.....
again IMHO

Re: SNES BUTTONS & MORE (read if planning a SNES colorway)
Thank you veteran. I have the same concern as yours as for the button. Even if i’m not using snes type buttons, i bought mine from dead pan robot and another bunch from ebay, and all of them are slightly smaller than the holes.
This gives them too much play and i really don’t like them at all.
So if you have a dealer for normal DMG buttons as well i would be interested... thanks again !

for me the best seller on Aliexpress......
their service is second to none, and normally their delivery to the UK is mostly around 2 weeks (sometimes even quicker)
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/194561 ... dd05MbjGQb
their buttons have always been on point....
but i've only ever bought my shells/cases from them as well.....

Thanks for the info! I like the idea of having the thicker volume wheel, also, 'Gamers Zone Store' is always my go to on aliexpress when I need gameboy stuff, never noticed that volume wheel before. decent shipping when using epacket to Canada, and lots of good quality stuff.

Useful info and links so I stickied the topic so it doesn't get lost.

Don't contact me about obtaining my board files (as you will not get them). If my Boards or PCB Kits are sold out, they will be restocked as soon as I can get them and there is demand for them. You can join the mailing list on my Website to be notified when they are available.

Re: SNES BUTTONS & MORE (read if planning a SNES colorway)
Your Mileage May Vary (i.e. everybody may not get the same results) with those replacement buttons, mine from Aliexpress were built to the same specs has the buttons in the cheap USB controllers, when installed in an official Super Famicom controller they were noticeably smaller, not hugely significant, but in a DMG with larger openings to begin with they didn't fit well at all, meanwhile the buttons out of the official Super Famicom controller were a decent enough fit in the DMG shell.VeteranGamer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2017 6:01 am
