Kite Circuit Sword build

Post by DarrylUK » Sun Feb 18, 2018 2:06 am

This is my 4th build now. I'd built 2 AIO's with Kites first board, already that was far easier than the original GBZ builds. Kite has taken it a step further this time. I'd also built one with one of Helders original boards. Here's a gallery of those 3 builds.

The time to build this could be easily less than an hour now. Very minimal case mods required, minimal solder joints and slick assembly.

Here's roughly the steps I took:

Case Mods:
  • Position the Hoolyhoo bracket and button wells in the case to mark up the X & Y buttons
  • Position the Kite backboard for L & R buttons and mark up the drill points
  • Position the backboard to mark up the USB C cut out
  • Carry out all case modifications (X & Y, L & R, USB C, Screen)

Soldering:
  • Soldered the 6 wires into the L & R backboard
  • Soldered the 2 wires to the fan point
  • Soldered the tactile switches to the L & R backboard
  • Solder the speaker lead on after cutting it to the optimum length
  • Extended my battery with a 2 way JST connector (note, my Chinese lead had the polarity reversed)
Assembly:
  • Bonded the Hoolyhoo frame to the screen
  • Bonded the L & R backboard to the case (3D bracket to follow to reinforce it)
  • Bonded the power switch PCB to the top corner of the case
  • Bonded the speaker in
  • Bonded the screen assembly to the case
  • Plug everthing together
  • Fit the glass screen
Here are some pictures of the build, there's not many because there aren't many steps!

Things I would do differently are not remove a section of case by the power switch, this is a hangover from the last builds I did. Even loosely positioning the power board I assumed I'd need to remove a little bit. I'll hide this with a cartridge. And I would replace the mode button switch. You can just about get away with it as it is, but for comfort I'd really recommend replacing it.

Thanks to Wermy, Kite and HoolyHoo for making the build possible.

Nice I want to start mine today but don't know if I want a clear case now...

Nice work!
I finished mine too using the CS, took about 2 hours (3 if you include my futile attempts to print tiny back buttons and wells).
I am holding off on posting for now (it looks pretty much exactly like yours for now), maybe when I get the missing pieces (forum battery, screen surround, better back switches and analog stick).

Just one question: What buttons are those (ABXY) ? I tried using original snes pad buttons, they look great but feel so mushy. I ended up using 2 pairs of original GBO buttons and they feel soooo much better.

I bought 2 black GB cases as I originally wanted a black build, it's the buttons that came with that. I saw a few clear and decided to go with that, I like seeing the PCB. Also it's nice to see the status LEDs dotted around the board light up during use.

They're not too bad. They could do with being 1MM longer, or having constant pressure applied to the back board. I will knock up a 3D printed bracket to fit in and apply pressure to the board against the case. The placement is pretty good.
