[UPDATE] "Air duct" and "fan-mount" for kites circuit sword

Post by derebbe » Mon Feb 19, 2018 12:11 pm

Hello guys!

I wanna provide you my two variants to mount the little 30mm fan to kites awesome circuit sword:

Variant 1: Air duct
I thought about a solution which blows the warm air out of the shell, so I came up with this little air duct:

The fan blows against the heat sink >> the warm air goes through the air duct >> passes the DMG shell through a little whole >> and finaly leaves the case through the grill of the game-cartridge:

To keep everything in place I used one little self drilling M1.6 screw which I put inside to the duct into the 3D printed game cartridge. Since I used PLA in my print, I put "here and there" some kapton tape to protect the plastic from the "heat" (actually it won't get hot enough to melt the PLA again) of the sink.

Unfortunately the little closing mechanism of the battery cover hits the fan, so I had to shorten it my 3mm. With some epoxy I glued them together again:

To connect the fan with the CSO PCB I uses a little 2pin JST cable, so it's easy to divide the fan from the other side of the shell which holds the PCB.

The air duct has to be printed with support enabled. The support in the "tunnel" were easy to remove for me id I used the following settings in Cura 3.6:
  • Layer height: 0.2mm (or less)
  • Infill density: 15%
  • Support: YES !!! important !!!
  • Support placement: everywhere !!! important !!!
  • Support pattern: ZigZag !!! important !!!
  • Support density: 12% !!! important !!!
  • Support X/Z distance: 1mm !!! important !!!
  • No support floor or roof !!! important !!!
  • Enable support brim

Variant 2: Simple fan mount
I designed a little bracket which can be used to attach the fan nicely (hopefully  ) to the CM of kites circuit sword. Then fan can be fastened with up to three M1.6 screws (I used the normal little "phillips head screws" from a 3rd party gameboy shell).
To make it fit, a big part of the game cartridge slot must be removed, and can be covered with a actual game cartridge again.

Please print with support enabled :)

You probably want to take more off around where the switch is :) (when you're doing it yourself)

if you could, please also try to design a variant that will not affect the back half of the case. it would be nice to have an optional solution where one don't have to cut off the cartridge slot. I know this won't result in the optimal usage of the fans potential performance, but nevertheless.

Thanks derebbe! I took an extensive look at kite’s wiki. But I thought that your solution would requier a different kind of trim.

It looks like this thing can take some screws, what size/type.

As for the gb slot mod :

Look at what I found
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2412998/#files

I think the fullsize cut version would help out for those who want to print it out.

As I already mentioned in my initial comment, I was using the screws which came with my third party DMG shell, those which were used to fasten both sides of the shell... Use some little 4/5mm M1 screws, the holes in the fan are quite narrow
