I gave it a try and the screen turns on, but it just displays lines. Keep in mind that this was basically my first time soldering, so it's really really bad and might even be the issue. I don't think I figured out how to keep the iron clean until I was about done. Also note that the white cable is not connected because I read somewhere else that it wasn't necessary. It's also a mistake that pp5 has solder on it (I accidentally made a bridge between that and 3.3v) but I'm pretty sure I separated them before I took these photos.

Anyway, I know it's a mess but if someone could put me in a direction, I'd really appreciate it.

For the connections:
Red to 3.3v
Black to ground
yellow to TV
white not connected

Looks similar to one i have used, here's a pic, please make sure its the same chip number. First pic shows where i wired to the pi for testing, good luck.

Unfortunately I don't think we have the same chip, Gus.

I've been doing some trial and error and have found out a couple things. Yellow and white wire seem to act the same, screen doesn't power on if red is connected to original contact point or first or third pins of the IC. The middle pin and tab of the IC also act the same.

One interesting thing I found was if I leave the red wire unsoldered and just touch it to the tab or middle pin while the pi is turned on, it will display a complete picture on the screen for a split second and then go back to lines.

Any idea what this means?

Hey do not touch the red wire around like that to pins. You probably shorted the power and GND pins.

Can you show me the front side of the pi with the soldering?

Can you resolder the yellow wire? It looks badly soldered.

Here's another attempt. Still just lines on the display. At this point I've already ordered another screen (hopefully i'll get one that's been proven to work this time). I'm wondering if I should order another pi as well, because I don't know how possible it is that I burned part of the board without knowing.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. I'm still open to advice and ideas if you have any.

Tinker boy sells a screen for pretty cheap

http://www.tinkerboy.xyz/product/3-5-lc ... -boy-zero/

Shown to work in the wiki listed as the "new gearbest screen"

ttps://sudomod.com/wiki/index.php?title=GBZ_Screen#Adafruit_Screen

Probably gonna go that route myself. Kinda wish I bought that initially instead of gambling with these bw screens but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I was able to get it to work. What I did:

Red - 5V
Black - Ground
Yellow - TV
White - (unused)

and then I added another wire from 3.3V to the regulator out tab.

The screen seems a bit grey and I hear a slight whining sound when I connect the 3.3V, but I've never worked with these screens before so I wouldn't know if that is right.

It doesn't makes sense to me that it would need two voltage sources which is why I doubt that this is correct.
