The button caps, are they your standard caps that go on tactile switches? What color options are you looking into. I specifically would be interested in White and Black for now as I am gathering parts for a GBZ build now and have a CM3 Sword board on order. I'm weighing options for L/R buttons and would prefer not to lose the cartridge reader but am opposed to for the right setup.

Thanks!!
Not sure which one you consider standard caps but they could be used with clicky tactiles. For this setup I had to make an insert for them to work with the soft buttons. Colors will be black, white, grey, red, blue, yellow, and green eventually when I receive them. For now only have black.
These are what I was thinking of.

Yes, similar except they have slight ring to keep them from falling through the case.

Would I lose the ability to add a cartridge reader if I use these buttons?

Unfortunately it occupies the same space, so yes.

love the feeling of the buttons, but I would love to see some drill template for this.
I failed at getting the holes correct, its not to bad, but
yeha, the board has the drillholes, but the gap between the board and the back is so big the drill might get in a bad angle..
its not to bad, but next gbz I make, I will try a difrent aproach

The best approach I found is to install the pcb with screws before soldering the buttons. Then use an awl or sharp nail that is approximately the size of the drill holes on the pcb and very carefully at a right angle press on the case to mark or etch the shell of the position of the holes. Remove the pcb and with a thin black marker dot those markings. You should be able to visually see if the holes are aligned horizontallly. If they are not then remark. There is a slight tolerance so it should be ok, you just want to make sure they are all horizontally aligned and parallel to the battery bay. Making a 3d drill guide is easy but I didn’t feel it was necessary with this technique. Thank you for the feedback. :)

oh I did , looked strait, but ended up being a few mm off to one side, its not a huge deal, but from the back its noticable.
will def try to do it difrently next time I make a new GBZ
