In case you are still looking for a solution:

See the 4 pads on the bottom left corner? the first pin from right is 3.3V and the second is GND. those are the only 2 pins you need to power the display. Then just connect a yellow or white wire to the Pi and you will have a working lcd

Here is another board that has a similar IC and the 4 pin.
Brilliant my dear sir. So it should be safe to even draw directly from the battery and not via the powerboost to power the screen then? To save the 10% efficieny drop that the powerboost causes.

And huge thanks for this modification, was spot on :)

The 3.3v pin directly powers the main IC on board. I would not power it using the battery directly as the battery is capable of 3.7-4.3v.
You can use a 3.3v regulator like https://www.adafruit.com/product/2166 to get 3.3v separately if you want so as not to rely on your pi.

If you have a screen and board to spare you can test it at your own risk.

I was wondering if you ever found a way to reduce the flickering or blurriness on this board. Other than that you are pretty much a life saver to me :D

I have just posted a Wiring Guide for the 3.5″ GearBest Screen with 5V Mod. Most 3.5' screens use the XL1509 chip for converting 12v to 5v so this guide should also work on these screens too.
New! tinkerBOY PowerSwitch v1.0 with Safe Shutdown
Game Boy Zero Controllers available @ tinkerBOY.xyz * Support
tinkerBOY Controller v3.0 - built-in usb controller, usb audio, and usb hub

I modded my screen the way you did (even though it works on 5v) and I've noticed a huge difference in the temperature. Is there so much power lost by not modding the screen?
