Help for a first timer

Post by Booticus » Thu Sep 27, 2018 5:15 pm

I am excited to finally attempt to build the mintypi when v3.0 comes out, but I've never even used a soldering iron before. I plan to try with the practice boards, but outside of that i have no clue on how to actually prepare and practice soldering in the first place. Does anyone have any good tips or links to fairly good tutorials? Thanks.

If you've never soldered before I recommend getting a small soldering project on Amazon to practice on. It's a good way to get your feet wet for a small investment.

Here's a link to the one that I bought when I first started:

Other than that, I'd say there's a pretty good guide on the forums here, do your research for tools (no need to buy the super expensive stuff), and watch a few videos to help you get started. Be patient and practice, practice, PRACTICE! I've been lucky to not have burned or destroyed any of the boards that I've got so far, hopefully you won't have any issues either.

Good luck! You're gonna have a blast!

The V3 should also not have much soldering-if at all.

You will still need to solder the pi in the same way, get a fine tip and keep trying at those practice boards.

Thanks for the help everyone. I've ordered the soldering practice kit, and will soon be ordering some practice boards. Hopefully, I can get adequately prepared thanks to your suggestions

Here is a nice soldering guide from a member here. Lots of tutorials online too, watch lots of YouTube videos etc...Good call on ordering practice kits too, they will help out a lot.
