[SOLVED] Qi charger getting seriously hot

Post by schlagt » Sat Jul 27, 2019 10:20 am

Hi all,

I just finished my build a few days ago and it turned out great! Thanks for this awesome kit.

However, I just tried the Qi charger for the first time, besides a basic test on build finish. After ten minutes of charging I noted that the cartridge (basically the Qi coil) was extremely hot. This also heated the Pi quite a bit and I'm glad it didn't kill it or the SD card. The battery actually got charged and the tp4056 indicated the red charging LED. I didn't have the device powered on while loading.

I realized that the thing got so hot that it botched my cartridge by melting it a bit. I'm also pretty sure that the tp4056 also got hot during the whole thing but that could be related to it's position directly under the coil.

Is it supposed to get that hot?

I bought one of these http://s.aliexpress.com/v6bUZVbA last year and it also gets very hot when charging. I think most of these cheap wireless chargers are not really meant to handle high current charging. So I tested it with a low current(slow charging) microusb cable and it seems to work fine without getting hot.

Thanks for the suggestion, that could really be the case since I've been using a 2.0A rated charger. I also noticed that it wasn't the coil but the Qi PCB that got hot.

Would you suggest going lower than 1.0A?

Yes it’s the charging base and not the coil. I’m just using a 500ma power adapter. You can try 1A adapter and see if that is ok.
