Circuit sword issue at assembly

Post by J-Malice » Sat Nov 30, 2019 11:16 am

I'll try and be as thorough as possible. I have been assembling by circuit sword over the passed few weeks. As of today I got a block of time I could hopefully finish it. Got up to step 12 of kites guide. But the screen remained black. The backlight turned on but no images were displayed for the tester mode. Did some digging on the forum for people with similar issues. One guy had solder that had bridged some of the connections on the screen ribbon connector. So I checked there and it didn't really look like I had any bridges. Even took pictures with my phone so I could zoom in super close and exam the pins. Then I checked the same connectors on the pi connector. Doesn't seem to be an issue either.

So then I noticed the 'pgood' LED doesn't light up. So I tried something kite mentioned to another person in his thread. I held down the power button for 5 seconds, with the battery and usb-c cable disconnected, plugged usb-c began in and looked to see if there "PON" light would flash three times. While plugging the cable in, before completely getting it in, the "pgood" light flagged 3 times. But once the cable was fully seated, it stayed off and the "PON" LED never made any flashes.

The fpc cable is oriented correctly and has no damage. The screen itself seems fine as does it's cable.

Any suggestions? Pictures included for reference.

Quick observation, in the last picture you have it looking like it shows the issue, but you don't have an SD card inserted. Have you flashed the SD with the latest image and inserted it and tried to boot?

The PON flashing 3 times sounds good, even if not fully in as soon as it gets power it flashes 3 times to show that the power management IC is working.

Yeah, I tried it with two different SD cards. Snapped the pic while I was reimaging the SD so I'd have a picture of the light sequences. And the "pgood" led flashed, not the "Pon". Not sure if that makes a difference.

ok cool, hm, when the SD is inserted into PC you see a 56MB USB drive appear with a bunch of files in, one of which being "config-cs.txt" ?

If so then all is good on the SD, at this point it could be a couple of hardware things all of which aren't easy fixes, but are easy for me to do, so could you send me an email and we'll sort out returning and i'll fix and return to you for free

Yeah, I had it set to tester mode. Really tried finding any bridged connections because then I could move in with the project. But shit happens. Even worse because you just helped me get another volume wheel board.

I'll shoot that email out.

How annoying :( sorry about that, i have a feeling it's the SD socket missing some solder which was an issue on some of the older boards
