PCH-2000 Joystick Breakout Boards

Post by JIMMI » Mon Jan 13, 2020 11:43 am

I'm working on making some breakout boards for PSVita joysticks to use in the boxypixel DMG-CM3 housing. It's not limited to this housing though as the PCB is as small as possible to accommodate most builds (a little over 10mmx15mm)

I'm just trying to gauge interest from the community if anyone was interested in these boards as I have experience in PCB making and feel like giving back to the community that has helped me a lot.

I know there are boards out there currently for this but none are broken out (that I could find) for this specific application with the correct pin-out printed.

My test boards will be here within a week and the FPC connectors in a week or so after that.

If anyone is interested I'll update this topic with pictures and more info as time goes on.

I'm sure if you post pictures and it actually in use there might be interest.

I was planning on it, just waiting on the boards to come in. Then its soldering time!

There will be a small video that will be posted using an Arduino as an output so people can see how they work.

I'm also designing a second one for the switch Joycon joystick since I had a few people mention on here they wanted to use them as well in a few projects.

ETA for the bulk of the boards is somewhere around the end of February so there will be small updates till I have finalized the designs. :D

Looking forward to seeing the results of this, sounds awesome! The current solutions and boards are very DIY and a bit hard to understand sometimes.

I'm interested. I just ordered the DMG-CM3 shell. Expensive, but I couldn't resist - it looks stunning and it actually saves on getting a load of 3D printed parts produced, and a load of work modding a plastic shell. I'm just a little sad my dremel isn't going to get any use now. I would have enjoyed the challenge! Maybe for the Circuit Shield. :)

The last thing I need is the stick so I will wait for your updates.

Quick update:

I ran into an issue with the parts I had ordered from an overseas vendor. Long story short their description was off and I needed to source the proper connector from someone else.

For logistical reasons, there is some delay on parts from China, I'm sure all of you know what is going on there but hopefully I will have the correct parts in the next few weeks. I will however be purchasing a few "sample" parts from a more expensive US based vendor to try and speed this whole process along with verifying everything functions as intended before ordering more PCBs.

I just want to get everything in order and make sure that it's up to my QC standards before making it available. Even if it's a super simple breakout board. If all things go as planned, I will have an update again for you guys very very soon.

Quick update:

I have made up one of the test boards with the new FPC connector. As you can see this was not the original part as the silkscreen doesn't match. I will be redesigning these boards to work with this new FPC connector so hopefully they work better since the pads will be in the correct location.

I will post pics of it working when I have the time to hook it up to the circuit sword.

Hopefully I will have another update soon.

The concept board is looking very clean and the labels makes the solder easier. :)

I know they are bulkier, but after putting a Switch Joycon joystick in my latest build I don't think I could ever go back to the vita sticks, would love to see a dedicated breakout board for those one day but this is great in the mean time!
