I flashed a fresh copy of Retropie and it resulted in no changes to sound

from the diagram that you posted, I can see that you have left going to A+ and right going to A-.

This is a no go as the two ouput will cancel each other out, result? low volume.

you need to "merge" the left and right and solder to A+, the A- can be ground.

Where do I need to connect ground? To the same ground as audio on the pot?
