Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
Maybe try to eliminate a few components. I would just try the amp and speaker alone. To confirm the the speaker works. Then I would add pieces back to see. Also note. If you are using the adafruit amp there is a small screw pot on the amp that can adjust the volume too. I typically set the volume in emulation station to 100 percent and then adjust the screw pot until volume is decent.
Also note that pwm is notorious for static. And it will always kinda be there.
Lately I've been skipping volume wheels (can adjust volume in game) and headphones (I never use the headphones anyway). That seems to be sufficient for my purposes.
Hopefully you can get it working!

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
Ok, I took out the headphone jack and the volume wheel and just connected the pi to the amp and the amp to the speaker. When I connect it I get a audible sound coming from the speaker so I know its getting power and it is on but I still have no audio from the game. I checked to make sure I didn't have the audio muted in the emulator.
I'm starting to wonder if I somehow input the code in the config.txt file wrong. I just put the sd card into my PC, opened up the config.txt file and copied and pasted the code:
dtoverlay=pwm,pin=18,func=2
into the bottom of the file bellow all the other text. Then saved and ejected the sd card.
I'm going over my wiring but as far as I can tell its all connected up right. I'm going to look for another speaker to test on but I don't know if I have any spare headphones around. I will let you know if I figure it out but any tips on the code side would be appreciated!

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
I just checked the sound using another speaker from a pair of headphones. Again I could hear the speaker turn on but I got no game sound. Really makes me think it might be the code?

Also wondering if me using the "mintyPi" image might have something to do with it? I'm just grasping at straws here. lol

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
Hmm. You're sure you have gpio18? That's gpio18. Not physical pin 18.
Also. I didn't think of the minty pi image it might be defaulting to usb audio...in that case try this. See step 5 here. It shows how to make usb audio default. You'll be able to see if usb is default in the minty pi image. If so you can reverse the process seen in step 5 to make the pwm default again...

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
What you could also try is a fresh retropie image. Not the minty image. If the speaker works there you can install retrogame and the minty combo script manually.
Sorry if I've made things more complicated!!
One last thing I totally forgot, you can add this line to the config too, it may help with static:
disable_audio_dither=1

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
it's definitely in the gpio 18 spot and it appears to be connected correctly to everything else. At this point I guess I will start a fresh install of retropie and see if I can get audio.
Is retrogame a package I can install from inside the or do I need to copy files from somewhere?

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
Retrogame needs to be installed. You can follow these instructions and just use the gpios you soldered too. Just edit the retrogame file in the boot directory to the gpios from the list I provided earlier:
https://learn.adafruit.com/retro-gaming ... s-software
And if you want the minty hotkeys you can install the script following these instructions:

Re: Newbie with questions about 1st build.
OMG!!!! I have audio! Swapped out the sd card and got a new copy of retropie, updated the script and bing, bang, boom, crunchy audio!!!! Im guessing it was the mintypi script somehow being a pain. Now im looking into installing retrogame and getting my buttons all back in order!
Be back soon with updates!
