gameboy zero by the noobest guy

Hi !

After thinking about this for a long time I came across sudomod and eventually decided to have a go at building a gameboy with retropie for me and my son.

I only got the screen and the pi so far, but I want to go one step at a time as I'm a total noob in electronics. My first step was to modify the screen I received (a DW variant 9 I believe) and connect it to the pi.

I don't know what to think of the result, I know the screen quality is poor but the console is barely readable and the the background of the retropie boot logo appear like it's moving. I wonder if this is due to my poor soldering or just that I had too high expectation for the screen.

Here are some picture if someone can give me advices.

Don't use the IMG button when it's a link to your google photos, use a free image hosting site like postimg.org. No one can see your images even though you probably can.

your wiring needs some fixing.....


you've got both video wires (white & Yellow) connected/soldered to the pi zero, you only need one.....

i would suggest just to have the yellow connected with gives you av1 (swap it with the white, and leave the white disconnected)

i would also suggest to shield that wire (yellow) just to avoid any interferance viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2850#p31328


your not gonna get a crystal clear display because of the type of screen, but for the gameplay it will be fine....


also look at the ES theme to make navigating through the menues easier viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1549&hilit=es+theme

I did the wiring as you described and replaced the yellow wire with a shield one but I still have some flickering I think. I guess I'll try to clean all the soldering and restart from scratch when I receive my helping hand.

may be a silly question, is your shielded wire properly grounded

are you sure your giving the componants the correct amount of power......

not supplying enough power will also cause some issues as well....


if you can show where your at now with the changes (photos), before you start from scratch again

What size power supply are you using to test the pi? I recommend at least a 10W (5V @ 2A) power supply. That might help with flickering.

Even with a slightly blurry screen, the gameboy zero is freakin cool. Don't give up.

Here is what I did:

dont feel stupid, everyone starts somewhere.... (the stupid ones are the ones that dont ask...)

you havent grounded (shielded) the the video wire properly

the other core needs to be going to a ground... luckily you have a ground point right next to each end of the video wire (inner core)....

the point on the pi zero where you originally had the yellow wire is a ground point, solder the outer core there

the point next to the yellow wire on the screens board where the black wire is soldered to is also a ground point, solder the outer core there also

the inner core remains soldered to the video points at both ends






also have a look at the power supply your using.....

I tried to link the video wire correctly (appart from my poor soldering) this time, unfortunetly the result is still the same. Here is the soldering and a gif from the screen behavior.
