Gameboy Advance, version 2 - Spi screen

Post by Lpoolm » Sat Feb 24, 2018 11:46 am

So many moons ago i built a gameboy advance zero as had a few spares from my zero build
https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... nce#p25088, built a few gameboy dmgs since then (never show them off).
Then stumbled upon a thread by Moosepr about setting up spi screens so decided to get one. i tried setting up but never really got it going so it went in the draw!
Then more recently VeteranGamer started a thread saying he was testing a few spi screens and was getting some good results in screen speeds so decided to get mine back out and give it a go. While I was getting it going and the basics done he released his ultimate gameboy which encouraged me even more!

Due to screen size I had bought (i think 2.8") I was limited to what it could fit it in but had an old gameboy advance case and the screen almost fits perfect except for a few millimeters on the left but can live with that!

So had a few issues on the way but had some good help finally got my gameboy advance finished, it contains:
-2.8" spi screen, I have yet to notice any slow down/break up of picture yet and clarity is so much better especially when it comes to text. My only complaint is the screen I have seems to be more suited for portrait then landscape so is slightly darker when looking head-on rather then an angle but not bad!
-usb audio, first time I have used but after a few re-wires I now have the clearest sound yet on a build!
-fake game cover removes to show 2x usb ports and micro sd card access
-I used fibre obtic to be able to show power light on the front.
-2000mah battery, as I have just finished yet to be able to test battery life but hopefully a few hours from it?

I didnt take any internal pictures purely due to the way its built it is all in layers so each thing goes on top so all you see from above reaaly is the usb hub and a few things either side, plus it looked very much like my previous build, just better cable management

Overall I would recommend spi screens, I am just collecting parts but hoping to either do a Gameboy pocket next or an Atari Lynx, will see which takes my fancy.

good looking GBA build, nice work....
the X & Y buttons look ok too.....

the SPI screen apparently can come in a wider viewing angle, and even though their not exactly IPS their still better than the basic viewing angle screens (you just have to search for them on somewhere like aliexpress)

i agree the picture quality is much better than the composites...
and i'd say the power consumption is gonna be lower too (this is an assumption by me, not backed by any knowledge)

some (if not most/all) of the games look really decent on these screens (compared to the composites), and personally i also havent noticed any real slow down or issues

Nice build, and looking forward to your next build....

the x and y buttons are the issue! due to the "close-ness" to the R1 button. I tried to fit more gba buttons in but were too big, even gameboy pocket wouldnt fit so decided to use some buttons from an old remote control.
They need tidying up a little, just smoothing out more then anything but they actually work really well, a lot more responsive then my version 1!
