and more importantly any success with installing this on a Retropie build

i'm currently building a 1UP kit for someone....
and even though the latest version of Recalbox (4.1) is kinda neat (the virtual keyboard is a feature Retropie needs)
(which has MK arcade joystick drivers pre-installed)
i wanna try Retropie on it....
(i've tried installing it, but keep getting errors, i'm definitely doing something wrong)
any help will be greatly appreciated.....

but i'm just trying to do it via the bog standard GPIO route, and still falling flat....
i just cant load the drivers properly....
