VNMan's Gameboy Zero build

Post by vnman » Mon Sep 05, 2016 7:07 am

This is what I have so far...
Image_1.jpg
On the way I have destroyed 3 cases (Third party cases), 2 screens... :(

Still need to work out where to place the Pi Zero, battery(ies), power boost.

For the power boost, still haven't decided on Banggood's or DX's (The one in the picture).

I want to retain the battery compartment, this means that the Pi Zero won't fit where Wermy has his. Might put external USB port there instead....

BTW I used AIO from Helder's. Tested a bit yesterday and it works.

Got time yesterday to finish the front part of the case, namely volume wheel, speaker, head phone jack.

a little problem at first try - speaker sound distorted, will be fixed by adding the resistors.

two more problems that need to be fixed
  • buttons pressed registered more than once - waiting for the USBasp to reprogram the board
Things to do -

back part of the case. This is where the "power strip", Pi Zero, battery or batteries, power boost live.

Wow! How did you get so many buttons on and a joystick?! I would love to see the wiring behind this.

-Hope you work out the bugs,

Update on my build -

Tried with PWM Audio and decided that it is not for me, too much hissing. Even with the resistors in place still the sound is not that good, the distortions reduced and with that the sound levels.

So I removed the PWM0 & PWM1 cables from the AIO, wired up the IQAudio DAC+ compatible board and the sounds came out of that is nice and clear throught my portable speakers (not working with the speaker & head phones on the AIO yet...).

Also tested the 14500 batteries and banggood power boost and they works. Waiting for the power switch as the switches that I ordered are too small to fit onto the case.

here is the pic of "almost" finish Gameboy Zero version 2 :D

Did I mention that I destroyed a few cases and screens?

For the screens - one just won't power on, the other is producing unstable pictures.

For the cases the button holes are a little off for the controller boards that I have, might just do what I done with the extra buttons on this build. And redo version 1, which uses Helder's Audio board and Leonardo pro clone.

The Screen and new case arrived yesterday. Still waiting for the power switches...

Here are the parts to rebuild my version 1 of GBZ, so this will be version 3 :D

As you can see I have 3 * 4 buttons boards and 2 controller boards, this time around I will try to make use PRS-Tech board and teensy 3.2.

The battery is a little too big to fit in the battery compartment, might need to swap to a different one or might remove the battery compartment.

The 2 buttons mapped to L1 & R1....

Thinking of drilling 2 holes on the sides for L2 & R2. Also thinking of putting the "reset" switch where the "power hole" is..
