If you haven't ever used more than 12v, then your wiring is probably just wrong. And the information showing on the Amazon page you showed is accurate as far as I can see. It's just the info on the actual box that's inaccurate.

Did you do the little "hack" where you have to solder a jumper cable from the power input on the board over to one of the chips? I don't know what happens if you don't do that, but only know that everyone here says that you have to do it to be able to work at 5v. So if you're connecting to your Pi without doing that, I'm going to guess it's not going to work.
And maybe if you have done that, and then put 12v to it, it may be fried?

I did not yet hack because first wanted to test whether the screen worked, so I did not. I saw that the power input was 12v was the one I used. In the wiki, shows that not all versions (V) need the hack and that some, like mine (V7), work well with 5v.
