Troubleshoot a damaged Adafruit Composite Screen

Post by deepReef@150m » Tue Nov 15, 2016 1:30 am

While attempting the 12 to 5v mod for the Adafruit screen (following Adafruit and Wermy's guides), I managed to damaged one of the ground pins for the leads (see pic attached). By damaged I mean I REALLY DAMAGED the solder pin hole, as in no copper trace left, charred as Mordor damaged!

Given that I spent $45 on the board I thought, why not plug it in anyways, and BAM it lit up fine, no problems at all. Does anyone have any suggestions on a permanent fix for my naivety before I continue with the build and pretend I never did a bad thing?

I noticed that the pin out on the driver board has two Ground pins side by side (one of which I damaged). Are there any foreseeable problems with doubling-up on ground connections? One lined feeding ground pin3 from the top for the regulator removal bypass, and one of the base, for the board ground, running to the power strip(eventually).

Thanks for all of your help!

If the damaged pad was ground, just look next to the pin to see where it is connected (follow the light green color [dark green is cutouts]) and scrape off the surface gently until you see the conductor underneath. Add a little solder and you should be able to connect to it again.
