External USB

Post by jhillman » Fri Oct 28, 2016 6:18 pm

I could just try this, but I thought I would ask since you guys probably just know.

I was never able to get a USB hub to work and my current layout in the shell probably wouldn't fit one anymore, but I would still like to be able to connect an external controller, a keyboard, or something without having to take the whole thing apart.

If I provide power to a female USB port and connect the green and white wires to pads 22 and 23, will the USB port work even though pads 22 and 23 are also connected to a Teensy? Do I need to get a hub working to be able to do this, or is there another way?

Thanks.

I really don't think this will work. Can you provide more details as to why the hub wont work?

I have been away from this for a while, so I didn't notice your reply. I'm not sure what to say about why it didn't work. I was following wermy's guide as closely as I could, but when I wired the hub to the Pi, nothing I plugged into the hub was recognized by the Pi. If the hub wasn't connected, keyboards and game controllers were recognized and could be set up. I thought that I might have damaged the hub when I removed some ports so I bought another one and wired it up without modifying it at all (both hubs were identical to the one wermy uses in his guide), but I had the same problem.

My Gameboy Zero is complete and working very well minus the USB hub. I would like to make it work (I would really just like to be able to connect a USB controller, so I don't need the internal port, just one external port), but I'm not sure what else to do. I ended up moving the PowerBoost down to the area where the hub would go to give my self more room for wires, so I'm not sure I have room for a hub anymore.

Thanks.

One, I am going to assume that hubs exist for a reason and you can't connect to devices on one data port.

Two, does the hub work when plugged via an OTG cable? Or, maybe even check if the hub works at all by plugging it in to a PC?

I confirmed with my laptop that all ports worked fine, but I didn't try connecting it with an OTG cable before I wired it to the Pi. That would have been a good idea.

I just found out the hard way that one of the usb hubs listed in the wiki does not work on the pi however when I tested it on a pc it worked fine. This is the one that I could not get to work on the pi.
