Help me

Post by Harvmck » Tue Jul 25, 2017 11:12 am

I have started the final part of my build. Putting it together. but it isn't working and I have no idea why. When put on charge a red light comes on on the microlipo. If anyone could tell me why or how to find out what's wrong would be much appreciated 😊

Can you post more clear pictures of the individual parts? The Pi.PCB, microlipo, power switch specifically.

Have you done any continuity testing on your power and ground from the micro lipo to the PCB? If you're charging you know your connection to the battery is good but it sounds like you have a bad connection from the micro lipo to the main PCB.

Test GND from battery to the 5V on the switch (not continuity but voltage) then check the 5v on the pcb if you get power there then test the 5V pins on the GPIO to see if they are getting power and also with power off check continuity on all points.

Fixed message, saw black and red and thought power not data. Soldering needs to be reworked so there's less exposed wire. I would suspect a short somewhere by looking at the pictures.

Too dark and blurry, the switch solder joints look almost like they are touching and all the hot glue isn't helping. Next time hot glue everything once it's all been tested to work

As said by dryja123, *please* go back and re-do your soldering. You shouldn't have any wire exposed outside of the small blob of solder. Strip a tiny bit, twist/tin it, and bury it in a small dab of solder on the pad. It's likely you just have a short somewhere because of all that extra exposed wire. It also looks like you're using some pretty thick/stiff wire, which will make it hard to close up. You may want to consider some thinner, more flexible wire like the silicone-coated wire I show in the video. It's especially nice for this project.

Edit: Not trying to be rude in my response, but don't forget you've got all that wired up to a lipo battery, which tend to explode if you don't treat them properly.

So do you suggest taking it all apart and reassembling it all? Im very new to all this and am not the best at soldering. But thankyou for all the advice and support. I really do appreciate it a lot 😊

It depends on how your solder works on the Micro Lipo. You don't have to tear down your entire build just start cleaning up your soldering and trim up the wires. As I've stated, and wermy as well, you're dealing with a device that uses a lithium ion battery. Lion batteries have a tendency to start fires and explode if not properly handled. If you're curious YouTube some videos where people short batteries out to show the destructive power these things have if not properly treated.
