Not all "All-in-one" boards are the same

Post by ToSGod » Mon Aug 28, 2017 9:40 am

So I started collecting up parts to build a GBZ. While searching the internet I found this All in one board.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/361672717529

Well I just received it and I notice it's a blank board with no chips on the back. I've bought most of the items for this guide

Is there an easy way to make it work still? Or should I just buy a different board.

That's a common ground button pcb. I'm pretty sure it is based on an early Helder design. I don't see where it is sold as an AIO board. These boards have been used a lot to build GBZ's with success, you just have to use other parts that are already installed onto AIO's.

Yes, you can make it work, you'll just need to follow this guide (more or less), just use your eBay PCB instead of modifying the original Game Boy PCB. http://www.sudomod.com/game-boy-zero-guide-part-1/

So you'll need to source either a USB sound card or or the parts to make a PWM filter, an amplifier, a microcontroller (or use GPIO) for controls, and a USB hub if you're using more than one USB device (if you use PWM audio and GPIO controls, you don't need a USB hub).

You can use a Teensy (per wermy's build), or a Leonardo, or a Pro Micro, or any other ATmega32U4 microcontroller:

Adafruit's Class D amp is a popular choice, but you can get cheaper options from Asia:

And sound cards are cheap and easy to find:

USB hubs are trickier, as not all hubs are compatible with the Raspberry Pi. Check the wiki for suggestions, or just buy a few and experiment.

Or, write off the $5 board and source an actual AIO.
