New to the forum

Post by Mischief » Fri Jun 03, 2016 3:15 pm

Hi all,

Been signed up for a bit but just started posting as I am usually a lurker. I managed to get a Pi zero from the last run on Pimoroni now it's a matter of collecting other parts :D also managed to pre order the Gameboy Zero green pcb from @grenade44 thread. Hopefully it won't take long to collect the rest of the bits and start posting my progress :D

I have so far purchased 3 faulty Gameboys however I have managed to repair them as I don't want to use a repairable one, I was thinking about just buying an empty replacement shell from ebay but need to know if any of the other parts (ie cartridge port, volume pot) can be purchased seperatly.

Cheers
John

Hi! I guess you are too good at repairing the broken Gameboys
What did you fix?

Don't know about the cardrigde port sorry.

I hope your build goes well, good luck!

Ones I have found have been none working screens or missing pixels usually it's the ribbon cable just hover a soldering iron over the cable and the pixels come back, one had no sound too but just needed a replacement speaker.

Will have to keep looking and hopefully I will find a completely broken one :D

Welcome to the forum. Good luck on your GBZ and I am glad to hear that you're getting a few more DMG's back into the world. As for your question, you can build the entire GBZ without a single OEM DMG part. You might need to use a little bit of ingenuity and modding, but it works.

Spend some time around the showoff area, you'll see a few people doing it. Mine is nearly finished finally as well, no thanks to med school, and I started with a blank shell.

What did you do for a headphone jack and power switch?

I haven't tackled the power switch yet, but I have a couple of ideas. I have something bookmarked somewhere that will work with a little bit of shaving, but I'm at the hospital so I don't have access to it.

As for the headphone jack, I used a 5pin disconnect audio jack with a 5pin 10k pot from the USB Audio. It seems to be working extremely well, except for the 1W speaker (meaning that the speaker is underpowered, but headphone output is at the right level and crystal clear). I'm thinking that the audio amp will fix this no problem, but I remember reading somewhere that someone got away from using it. That's not the case in my situation. Anyway, long rant... The audio works but I need to finalize it. I'll have physical connection schema written and posted in guides after my amp board gets here.

PM me if you can't wait for a working system and want to tinker with what I've already accomplished. I might be slow to respond though, I'm in finals right now in med school.

In the meantime, here is what I've used.
USB Audio
10K Pot
5pin Panel Audio Jack
1W 8Ohm Speaker (These fit perfectly!)
On it's way: Amp
