Pi3 USB failure[solved]

This is driving me nuts. I'm SO CLOSE to finishing my build and I'm dead in the water because I have no USB functionality.

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

I'm using a Pi3 that's been stripped down by following information on here. It's boots up Retropie just fine. I was trying to get controls up and going to test a game and nothing. I've tried two different Keyboards. I have a regular USB port soldered to one USB set and a Male micro USB plug soldered to another set to plug into my leonardo.

All the LEDs light up on my Leonardo when plugged in(The RX, TX and power). I get around 5 volts on my volt meter at the RED VCC wire and GND wire. I followed other peoples builds and information on Pi3 test pads for soldering the 4 USB wires. I get no response from both USB keyboard when retropie is booted up.

This is so disheartening. This is my second Pi3 in this build. The first one wouldn't boot at all after awhile after initially working after being stripped. I really don't want to drop another 35 bucks, wait for it to come in the mail, and strip down a 3rd Pi3. My build is done in a particular way where it's a major pain removing the Pi. It took many hours to remove the first dead one, strip another one, and install it. I have tested the second Pi3 over and over throughout the whole process to make sure I didn't break it and it has worked great. Now when im done and ready to test a game and close it up, no USB functionality.

I know my actual controls in my build from the leonardo are working fine. I've tested it plugged into the computer and in my first build.

If it really is broken, I hope there is a way to at least get the leonardo working through GPIO or something...

I will try to get pictures and more details on my exact wiring when I get a chance. It's late and I've given up for the night, and everything is put up.

Update: the issue has been fixed thanks to you guys. The data wires where reversed on the connections. Thank you!

Here you go. I just noticed something when I was taking the pictures this morning... So to determine the USB wire colors, I just googled USB wiring and looked at the google images because there are lots of diagrams. Well I just googled it again and it looks like there are differences with which color is supposed to be D+ and which is D-...... MAYBE I MAY have followed a bad diagram... Geez I sooo hope this is all that's wrong and I can just switch them...













I have a habit of breaking wires out of through holes all the time and I HATE desoldering and desoldering a thoughhole wires so embarrassingly I admit that's why I gob hot glue everywhere around wires so I won't break them off....

My wiring goes like this:

For the mico USB
Black= PP49
White= PP45
Green= PP44
Red = PP27(pretty sure that's what the actual test pad was. It's been chopped off but I checked before hand)

For the other USB Plug
Black = PP50
White = PP41
Green = PP36
Red = PP27

With the plug itself, with the pins on the inside facing downwards and starting on the left it's Black, green, white, red. I wired it verbatim according to this exact diagram.

I believe you are correct sir.... I didn't think about it as simplistic as your implying. I wasn't thinking it terms of wire order and instead color and pad numbers.

The big question now is, did I break something by making this mistake and is the micro USB wiring correct? It's obvious now the regular USB plug is wrong now, but I can't look at the actual order inside the micro USB male plug. I simply stripped a micro USB wire down and connected the corisponding colors in relation to a diagram showing colors I found.

i doubt that you've damaged anything (still could be posible)

but as a general rule of thumb....

Black (GND) is always next to Green (D+),
Green (D+) is always next White (D-),
White (D-) is always next to Red (VCC 5V)

Black
Green
White
Red

i'm not sure what the colour of the wires were on the micro usb, but if they were Blk,Grn,Wht,Red
then they should go in the same order (i've never come across them being different to this)


this should be the same both ends....
it also helps to twist the Green & White together, to avoid any issues with noise

Somehow bricking the original Pi3 I was using has made me very skittish and nervous so I'm overthinking a lot of things and abvouslty wrongly so. I've Already had another big scare yesterday when I powered it on. The 1000c started making a loud clicking noise three times with the yellow power LED on it flashing with the clicking. The screen would power off for a few seconds and then come back on. The Pi itself wasn't rebooting or anything and remained displaying the same image of the Retropie emulation station menus. This scared the crap out of me.

I took a volt meter and check everything I could for shorts, didn't find any, and then tried powering it on again and it worked fine with no clicking and screen cycling... I have no idea what it meant but it's made me a nervous wreck too...

I haven't been able to find anything on here or google about an adafruit 1000c making a clicking noise three times...

Clicking and popping is usually an indication of fuses or other compnents being damaged by a short.
