If you are using the Pi Zero, you can follow this Adafruit tutorial to get audio from the GPIO pins.

Instead, if you are using any other Pi, they have an audio jack built already.

No need for a USB DAC, you can use PWM audio as @nsqpdn points out. The Adafruit guide is a little out of date at this point with regards to the OS configuration they have you do - it's actually much easier than that now.
