What All Ive Been through To make A Gameboy

Post by Ninjameep » Tue Jun 14, 2016 6:30 am

This Isnt A Pity me Thing, i love this community and all the stuff i got through to actually find it wasnt what im too fond of, so to start off i am 17 and i had a limit on money to make this, was originally a school project but i was passed on it for all the effort ive put into it, i saw this by Adafruit:https://learn.adafruit.com/pigrrl-raspb ... y/overview
and thought 'oh sweet ive played alot of roms on my computer but having roms on the go sounds great' being the idiot i am i skim the article and talk to my brother and he says 'go buy it, lets make it' and i buy all the parts right? when i finish it i have a MAME machine , this project looks like a gameboy and i thought the entire way through that MAME was just the emulator, i now know form this situation that it was the system for games from the arcade machines i loved to play, but this wasnt what i wanted, and from all of this i tweaked everything and found retropie, thinking this would work, i thought all i needed to do was just replace the OS and everything will work? as you figured, no it didnt , i then found articles and guides and have been just doing what i can to make this a gameboy , i cant spend any more money on this as ive reached the limit when i bought the last thing ( http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/co ... button-pcb ) i got that, because its was better then the cut up SNES controller i made, the guides ive been using is

https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... s/overview
https://learn.adafruit.com/running-open ... g-controls
https://learn.adafruit.com/pigrrl-raspb ... it-diagram

and random youtube videos, im kinda at my wits end and have a spare gameboy DMG shell laying around (not the actual working gameboy as it died years ago and i happend to just keep the shell for memory purposes) now i have everything going fine , everything seems to work except the GPIO buttons and the screen being white (i assume it just wont connect to retropie) so yeah, ive been trying to do this and have pulled a few weeks of random all nighters trying to perfect it all (posting at 8:15AM currently pulling an all nighter)

---i love this community and am amazed by all of you, after this project i plan on doing the Gameboy-ZERO the right way---

TL;DR-- i made a mistake, turned one project into another , buttons for gameboy are connected by GPIO as is the screen, Neither will work (left, right and A work, start select and B do not) Screen is white (probably not connected right)

WHAT I HAVE:
Raspberry Pi Model B 512MB RAM
PiTFT - Assembled 320x240 2.8" TFT+Touchscreen for Raspberry Pi

[[Lithium Ion Cylindrical Battery - 3.7v 2200mAh
Adafruit Micro Lipo w/MicroUSB Jack - USB LiIon/LiPoly charger
PowerBoost 500 Basic - 5V USB Boost @ 500mA from 1.8V+ <--All Put Together Into A Working ON/OFF Switch
Breadboard-friendly SPDT Slide Switch]]
(i Messed up the GPIO Belt the first time, so im using a old computer belt)
A Small Speaker that can be plugged into the PI with VIA jack (its a plan atleast)
Gameboy DMG shell
Buttons+rubber Pads
common ground dmg button pcb (Via-http://store.kitsch-bent.com/)

Can This Be Done or Am i Wasting My Time? (thank you for reading all/ANY of this) <3

(will Probably Post Pictures Of What I have As A Better Picture To Paint You)

Yes, you can make a Gameboy with all these parts.

The only thing you are missing is a amplifier for the speaker, as the audio out from the raspberry is just Line Out (for headphones or amplifier).

Thanks

Also, this screen might not be as good as you would expect in faster paced games, as they tend to have low fps (17 and below).

Yep, as @Fleder said I am not a big fan of those GPIO screens for playing games - they are pretty slow framerate-wise. But, it will work so if you're fine with the limitations then go for it!

Good luck! :)
