Hello,

I have been using the various Youtube videos from Wermy to create a Gameboy Zero. Its my first attempt at modding anything really so I went ahead and ordered the required materials and tools needed for this project.

Now I managed to get all the way up until the point where I solder the screen-board wires to the raspberry pi (0).
(I am using this video as the guide btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbLAoOCit5k&t=17s)

According to the Sudomod wiki, I have a v7 type board on my screen. Which doesn't require any sort of modification to run off 5volt.
(http://www.sudomod.com/wiki/index.php/B ... te_Display)

However, when I power on the RBP0, the screen goes on-and-off, kind of like flickering. I will sometimes catch a glimpse of the screen saying: "AV2".

Is this something you guys recognize? Like maybe the soldering went wrong? Maybe its a known error with this type of screen?

If you search variant 7 in the forum...

You should find that a modification may be required
(Not sure why this isn’t made clear in the wiki)

But more to the point...
Why are people still buying these backup camera screens...
If they do the proper research before buying...
They will know that the best composite screen to get is the

GearBest 3.5” composite screen (definitely requires NO modification)
GearBest deliver to nearly everywhere in the world (there’s no excuses)

It’s time to ditch the backup camera lottery and the modifications that go with it...,

Do a quick search on variant 7 in the forum....

Good luck

edit: as a lot of people get too excited about their builds and over look the basics of doing a little research, here's a helping hand for you folks.....

http://www.sudomod.com/wiki/index.php/G ... #Variant_7

https://sudomod.com/forum/search.php?ke ... sf=msgonly

and there's definitely other posts on the forum about these issues....
(search and you shall find)

I'm almost positive that they are following Wermy's original tutorial video's which require the use of a backup camera.

I appreciate that most people are using Wermy tutorial videos....
and its still the best tutorial/guide out there by far, but it is over two years old (not taking anything way from it)....

but if people actually do a bit of research....

then they'll see that no parts in Wermy tutorial/guide are a requirement (with the exception of the RPi0 and the DMG shell/buttons)
they are just the parts he used at the time....

as 100s if not 1000s of the GBZ have now been built....
and the forum filled with all the Pros and Cons of each build...

doing a bit research is a bare minimum (IMHO)....

buy hey....
if people want to be a MacGyver and start ripping apart back up camera monitors, all the power to them....

but there are far easier options...

I have to admit that I just went ahead and looked for the parts he mentioned in his written version of the guide.
I did realize later that I could have done this more efficiently, some parts take a long time to ship as well.

Anyway, this is what I have now and I might as well make most of it!

Many thanks for setting me on the right track though! Much appreciated. :D

For my first few builds I really liked using the backup camera monitor because it was cheap and hacking it apart made me feel like MacGyver.

But now that I have made my first Kite CS build and I have seen what a much better screen can look like I don't think I'll go back to the backup monitors anytime soon. :P
