Buttons. Help me buy buttons.

Post by rumblepen » Thu Feb 28, 2019 12:37 am

I need 4 buttons, in the original DMG red, and the rubber pads to go with them. I'm not sure where to buy them. I'm concerned with getting something that feels "off", and I don't want to spend a bunch of money buying from several places until I find something made well. I was originally going to buy 2 more damaged Game Boys from ebay, but it seems impossible to even get one in horrible condition for under $20. That's too much for something that looks like it was dug up from the Tokyo landfill.

I hear RetroModding has good stuff, but their set comes with 2 concave and 2 convex buttons for $9.99 and without pads. I can't make the 2 concave buttons work in a six button layout, it just looks wrong, so I would need to spend $20 for 2 sets and I'd still need to buy the pads. I'm not interested in buying a 100 buttons from aliexpress either. what the hell am I going to do with a 100 buttons? There's THIS on ebay. The price is nice, but they look kinda cheap judging from the gnarly plastic on the button wings. I mean I could sand that off, but that doesn't leave me feeling good about the quality of those rubber pads. Has anyone ever bought these? Or maybe you can point me to something else.

I recommend this seller from Aliexpress, I have always had god experience with the stuff I get from there, below are links to the sets with original maroon buttons, and silicone pads. Both are sets of 10, which are much more manageable when compared to 100.

The seller also sell little sets with buttons and pads, which is okay. (and a plastic screen lens, that I can't comment on, never used it)

As for quality of this seller, yeah, the buttons are not as nice as the OEM buttons from an original gameboy, but they are very decent. I do also really like retromodding, but I typically only buy from them when I want some of the more unique colors that only they offer.

Do you still need buttons? Are you in the US?
I have 4 maroon A/B buttons that came from replacement shell kits I’ve used with other color buttons.

I also have a dpad and a silicone pad for dpad but no pads for A/B buttons.

I wouldn’t mind sending them for a small fee. Just shoot me a pm.

I'll listen in on this conversation as I also need 4 original Gameboy buttons. But maybe the aliexpress seller is good enough.
What about the silicon - good quality? I guess this is key to making the buttons "feel the way they should"?

Edit: by the way, the seller shows burgundy colored colors, but you can only choose between "black" or "grey" :?:
